A message from Andy Burnham
24th July

On Monday, I promised that we would change politics: taking power out of Westminster and putting the care of people at the heart of everything we do.
I said that by pulling together we can build a new national sense of unity, common purpose and positivity.
Because I really believe that together we can make this the moment Britain starts to believe again – the moment we bring back hope.
We are starting as we mean to go on: governing boldly, confidently and authentically as Labour. That is how we make this moment the circuit breaker our country needs.
That work began this week:
DAY ONE
My first instruction was to end rough sleeping at the first opportunity. Some said it would take decades. Others said it was impossible. I’m not having that.
DAY TWO
I cut taxes on electricity bills, giving people more breathing space and putting money back in their pockets.
DAY THREE
I capped bus fares at £2 for millions of people.
DAY FOUR
I backed thousands of pubs, clubs and music venues at the heart of our communities by cutting business rates by 20%.
DAY FIVE
Today, I worked from No 10 North, chairing the first meeting of the National Economic Council, because Britain doesn’t need more decisions made in Whitehall. It needs more power in the hands of people and places that know their communities best.
These are Labour values in action and this is only the beginning.
